High School Scholarship for the Visual Arts

The Brighton Art Guild is pleased to announce a call for applications for the 2011 Brighton Art Guild's Scholarship for the Visual Arts. This $200 scholarship, to support the creative development of a young Livingston County artist, will be competitively awarded based upon an applicant's artistic merit and his or her goals in the visual arts.

There is no cost to apply.

Eligibility

All students, ages 14-18, who are residents of Livingston County are eligible. The scholarship recipient from the previous calendar year will not be considered.

How To Apply

1. Complete, sign and mail an application by May 10, 2011. Please print clearly and complete all of information requested. Applications can also be printed from the Guild's website (see the link above).

2. E-mail your Artist's Goal Statement with three to five artwork samples attached as .jpg files, before midnight on May 10, 2011, to cl.skog@yahoo.com, subject line: High School Scholarship.

a) At the top of the e-mail, include your name, school, grade and phone number.

b) Your artist's goal statement should be at least 50 words, and should address why you make your art, how you make your art, what it's made of, what your art means to you, and what your visual art goals are for the next year.

c) Artwork samples must be attached as digital .jpg files (150 dpi, with the smallest dimension being at least 5" is suggested). Each .jpg file should be no larger than 2MB (2,000K).

d) At the end of the e-mail, list each .jpg file name. Include the title, medium and dimensions for each artwork sample (for example: JDoeArt1.jpg: "Sunset", acrylic paint on paper, 18" wide x 22" high).

Digital Photo Assistance

The Guild is happy to offer free assistance to students needing digital photos taken of their artwork samples.

2. E-mail your Artist's Goal Statement and a list of your three to five artwork samples before midnight, May 10, 2011. Don't forget to attach your .jpg file samples. E-mail submissions received after midnight on May 10, 2011 will not be considered.

Notification

Applicants will receive result notification via e-mail on or before May 25, 2011.

Scholarship Presentation

The scholarship recipient, along with his or her family, is invited to the Guild meeting on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, for the formal scholarship check presentation.

The Guild meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at the Brighton District Library, 100 Library Dr., Brighton.

Meetings are free and open to the public.

The scholarship recipient is asked to arrive to by 6:00 p.m. with 2-5 original pieces of art to be displayed.

About the High School Scholarship for the Visual Arts

This scholarship opportunity is funded by individual donations and proceeds from Open Studios, the Guild's self-guided tour of area artists' private studios.
